The evening of Tuesday 16th November saw the first competitive outing for Penrith Netball Club’s senior team for several years. Carlisle’s Comets and Penrith took to the court for their season opener in Division 2 of the Carlisle Netball League, playing at Harraby Sports Centre, with Penrith emerging victorious with a score of 25-13.
Judging by the number of footwork errors throughout the game, it was clear that both teams were finding their feet after a couple of years away but that didn’t stop Penrith from pushing to victory over the four quarters of gameplay.
Penrith led the scoring in the first three quarters, taking the opportunity to experiment with a few attacking and defending combinations along the way. Comets pushed back at every turn and kept Penrith locked in tight competition, especially in the fourth and final quarter which they eventually won 7-6.
Both teams began to settle and find their stride in the second quarter which only increased the contest. A win in this quarter was vital for Penrith and the Jackson/Aris shooting combination delivered, aided by a strong defence and agile mid-court, to finish 8-1 in their favour.
Penrith Captain Cara Watson noted that “every team member played well, and the way we worked as a team was exceptional, considering it was our first game. I can’t wait for the next one!” Congratulations are extended to the Players of the Match, Lucy Peile (Penrith) and Lucy U (Comets), as well as thanks to the umpires for the evening.
Penrith will be on court again in two weeks’ time when they face Stewartry in the next round of the Carlisle Netball League.
