Penrith Bounce Back for Round Six Win
Penrith stormed through to a solid win in Round Six of the Carlisle Netball League on Tuesday. This was the second time they had faced Carlisle-based Comets, and a second time victorious with a final score line of 33-10. Penrith’s strong start continued into the second quarter to see them take a 19-4 lead by the half-time whistle, pushed ever upwards by the tried-and-tested Blackburn/Holme shooting combo. The importance of defence was truly highlighted in this game too. An ‘iron curtain’ at the opposing end of the court provided a huge amount of turnovers, keeping Comets to single figures until the end of the fourth quarter. A handful of unforced errors peppered the third quarter when Comets began to put up a flurry of goals, but Penrith pushed back to drive the score to 27-8 at the three-quarter mark. The tiredness was creeping for both teams in during the final 12 minutes of the game, with Comets coming close to taking a quarter win. Despite the final score, it was a toughly-fought match for Penrith and helped identify areas of improvement going forward into future rounds. Disappointment for Penrith in Round Five
A slow start and unforced errors plagued Penrith’s Senior team in their fifth round match against Mavericks on Tuesday evening. Despite an incredible comeback effort in the final quarter, Penrith were pipped to the post by their opponents to finish with a tight 25 – 27 score line. Mavericks kick-started the first quarter, scoring back-to-back and taking a turnover along the way, but soon Penrith followed and kept the scoring low to finish slightly below with four goals to seven. So-called ‘coach killers’ were the star of the show in the second and third quarters, with fumbles and footwork creating several opportunities and turnovers for both teams, but the fourth quarter saw Penrith truly shine and show what they can do. Momentum swung in their favour and a flurry of goals from the Jackson/Holme shooting duo saw the team win this last quarter with a score of 10 – 6. This brought the final score to within two; a fantastic achievement considering the seven-goal deficit they were faced with at the end of the third quarter. Congratulations are extended to the Mavericks Player of the Match, Gillian Housby, as well as Penrith’s own Player of the Match, Eleanor Holme. Our thanks also go to the umpires for the evening.
